The Head, IEM, Medical Affairs, will be responsible for building and leading the newly established Apellis IEM medical team across Canada, Australia, and distributor markets. This includes developing IEM Medical Affairs strategies, overseeing both tactical Implementation and operational guidance, and providing oversight of IEM activities related to Medical Information, Medical Communication, Medical Education, and Key Opinion Leader (KOL) engagement. The Head, IEM, Medical Affairs will partner closely with cross functional colleagues to ensure collaborative, aligned approach across key internal stakeholders. Reporting into this position will be medical directors from Canada, Australia, and the distributor markets.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Be a key member of Apellis’ Medical Affairs leadership team
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with commercial, medical, clinical, market access, and regulatory colleagues to foster a culture of collaboration and innovation.
  • Represent Apellis in scientific presentations, international conferences, and industry groups. and serve as lead spokesperson with KOLs and various government agencies
  • Support pre- & post-launch and life cycle management activities.
  • Ensure all regional medical plans are developed in alignment with global medical strategy
  • Oversee the compliance of all IEM Medical Affairs activities with Apellis' policies and procedures, local regulatory and legal requirements, and ensure that appropriate systems and SOP/processes are in place.
  • Lead, engage, coach and develop the IEM Medical Team (at regional and local level) to foster high performance and strong collaboration amongst team members
  • Responsible for line management, professional development, and mentorship of direct report(s) including providing feedback on employee performance and goal setting
  • Responsible for driving strategic initiatives for employee development, process, and business improvements
  • Fosters and reinforces a culture that aligns with the Apellis Values
  • Up to 40% domestic and/or international travel
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • Must have a PhD, Pharm D or MD level degree or equivalent

Experience:

  • 12-15+ years of experience in a Medical Affairs organization
  • 5+ years leading teams in Medical Affairs
  • Demonstrated success in fostering effective relationships with KOLs and ability to support the development and execution of medical strategies for multiple products across different therapeutic areas
  • Pharmaceutical/Biotech launch experience preferred

  • Exceptional leadership skills and ability to inspire, motivate and mentor teams
