The Senior Director, Medical Excellence, is a key member of the Global Medical Affairs (GMA) Leadership team who will lead a cross functional team to implement key processes and programs ensuring consistency and high quality across the Medical Organization. The successful candidate will foster a culture of medical excellence and will drive continued strategic alignment and execution throughout the Medical Affairs organization. This role will oversee a team of Medical Affairs leaders representing Operations, Medical Information, Medical Training, Early Access Programs, and Compassionate Use.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Key member of the Medical Affairs Leadership Team
  • Lead a cross functional Medical Affairs team comprised of Medical Training, Medical Information, Medical Operations, and Early Access Programs.
  • Responsible for fostering medical excellence through the GMA organization in collaboration with Medical Affairs Leadership Team
  • Collaborate with Medical Directors, Field Medical, Advocacy, and Regional/Local Medical Affairs teams to ensure high quality programs are developed and delivered across medical information, training, operations, and early access programs
  • Identify efficiencies and opportunities across therapeutic areas, managing resources accordingly
  • Partner with Clinical and Commercial Excellence to enable high performing organization
  • Monitor the landscape and deliver ongoing assessments of strategy and initiatives to identify gaps and opportunities offering strategic advantage
  • Responsible for line management, professional development, and mentorship of direct report(s) including providing feedback on employee performance and goal setting
  • Responsible for driving strategic initiatives for employee development, process, and business improvements
  • Fosters and reinforces a culture that aligns with the Apellis Values
  • Up to 40% domestic and/or international travel
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • Must have a PhD, Pharm D or MD level degree or equivalent

Experience:

  • 12-15+ years of experience in a Medical Affairs organization
  • 5-10+ years of experience leading cross functional teams
  • Exhibits strong global mindset
  • Pharmaceutical/Biotech launch experience preferred

  • Proven ability to lead in a fast-paced environment, enabling the team to prioritize and manage multiple competing tasks and demands while ensuring overall quality and integrity
  • Enables creative problem solving, encourages unique solutions, and solves difficult problems with effective solutions

  • Strong interpersonal skill set necessary to influence and maintain internal effective and external collaborator relationships

  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including ability to effectively articulate highly technical/complex concepts to audiences with differing levels of experience
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, influence, and manage within a matrixed organization
  • Exceptional leadership skills and ability to inspire, motivate and mentor teams
