The Senior Director, Medical Affairs Rare Disease Program Lead, is a key member of the Global Medical Affairs strategy team who will lead the global medical director and scientific communication teams for the rare disease programs across hematology and nephrology. This individual will work closely with medical affairs, clinical operations, clinical development, commercial, legal, regulatory, quality, research, and corporate communications to oversee the Medical Affairs rare disease strategy and execution on rare disease programs. Additionally, the Senior Director, Medical Affairs Rare Disease Program Lead, will be responsible for all Medical Affairs aspects of the alliance with the partner company. This includes representation and leadership in the Joint Alliance Committee, ensuring productive, collaborative relationships across the organizations, and internal cross functional alignment to have one Apellis voice in the various alliance forums. The successful candidate will provide effective leadership, strategic insight, and ensure execution of key initiatives while enabling the highest degree of cross functional and cross alliance collaboration to ensure successful preparation and launch of the rare disease programs.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead Global Medical Affairs (GMA) Rare Disease Programs across hematology and nephrology
  • Oversee development and implementation of GMA strategy for pegcetacoplan across hematology and nephrology
  • Ensure appropriate representation of late-stage development programs at the Rare Disease Program Team, with close coordination and strong communication among the respective therapeutic area medical directors
  • Coordinate with 3M partners to have aligned strategic point of view to input at the Therapeutic Area Leadership Team (TALT)
  • Lead all aspects of the Medical Affairs relationship with the partner company including representing Apellis Medical Affairs at the Joint Alliance Committee, fostering a collaborative partnership
  • Collaborate with rare disease leads across Clinical Development, Regulatory, Commercial, Clinical Development Operations and other functions as needed to ensure appropriate strategic alignment, prioritization, and execution of rare disease pegcetacoplan strategy and plans
  • Responsible for line management, professional development, and mentorship of direct report(s) including providing feedback on employee performance and goal setting
  • Responsible for driving strategic initiatives for employee development, process, and business improvements
  • Fosters and reinforces a culture that aligns with the Apellis Values
  • Up to 40% domestic and/or international travel
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • Must have a PhD, Pharm D or MD level degree or equivalent

Experience:

  • 12-15+ years of experience in a Medical Affairs organization
  • Experience in rare disease required; experience in hematology or nephrology preferred
  • Significant experience across drug life cycle, particularly in phase 3 development and post-marketing setting
  • Alliance management experience strongly preferred
